Cairo mushrooms gone mad

Every day a new mushroom sprouts on the roof of my house. It is said that these mushrooms are the Egyptians’ main way of communicating with the outside world. They feed us images of violence, of the state of the world, in hundreds of languages, with films about love, soap operas and horror films, with pornography and the most recent executions, wars and torture in prisons, and with images of beautiful, neurotic young singers. They make us happy by feeding us permanently and asking nothing in return. Optimists promise that we will soon have left the written word behind us entirely and that all the roofs in Cairo will have turned into chaotic mushroom plantations. Progress.
