Modern shopping in a rural setting

The large South African supermarket chain PEP STORES has opened outlets in Namibia’s rural north, giving people living in and around small towns like Tsandi access to modern consumer goods. People from nearby villages travel to the shopping centre using their own transport. Placid donkeys wait patiently outside for their owners to return. In the background we can see a modern car: its engine needs to be switched off while it’s not being used, but the hearts of the donkeys keep beating, and they know their owner will soon be back. Here, the traditional and the modern exist side by side – a fascinating scene and typical of 21st century Africa.
